Among them there are no leaders, no property, no gods and neither past nor future. Social researcher Khaled Hakami learns their language and experiences a culture shock that could not be more surprising, funny and astounding. His award-winning story shakes the foundations of Western values and beliefs. Humans spent 95 percent of their history as hunters and gatherers, yet within two generations at most, this form of society will no longer exist. Their nomadic life in the rainforests of the Malay Peninsula knows no social, political or economic inequality, neither between men and women, nor between children and adults. The cliché of the primitive Stone Age human is just as far from the truth as the romantic notion of indigenous life in harmony with nature. But how does a society function without hierarchy, without property, without social institutions and without complex technologies? What does daily life look like in a world that does not extend beyond the boundaries of the rainforest? What do hunters and gatherers think about the «strange beings» from industrialized countries who cannot navigate the rainforest and thus provide pure entertainment? Khaled Hakami, macro-sociologist at the University of Vienna, won first prize for his lecture at the Discovery Days in Flims. His story is so compelling and significant that people talked about it for days after the festival. He not only tells about hunters and gatherers, but repeatedly conveys their everyday life and values with great wit to our Western society. Laughter and amazement are just as much guaranteed as surprise and astonishment. An Explora highlight that will provide every visitor with unique stories and despite fewer images…
